In 1994 the Science and Engineering Research Council (formerly the Science Research Council) was dissolved. After a series of temporary arrangements, RAL and its sister laboratories at Daresbury (Nr Warrington) and Chilbolton became a research council in their own right. These facilities, known as the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils are now overseen by the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC).
