The Ionospheric Monitoring Group

Introduction

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory operates ionosondes at RAL (Chilton) in the UK and at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Until June 1998 there was a third instrument at Lerwick in the UK. Ionograms and scaled URSI parameters from all three stations are archived in the WDC. The RAL ionosonde has replaced the instrument that was previously running at Slough.

During periods of special interest the sounding programmes of the UK ionosondes can be adjusted to better meet current scientific objectives; e.g. by recording ionograms at higher time resolution than the normal one hour period. Please contact us if your research requires more detailed sounding to be carried out.
