International Geosphere-Biosphere Program

IGBP (Global Change) aims to understand the Earth and its environment as a whole, in order to detect global change and to help in the planning of responses. Previous ICSU programs concerning the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, magnetosphere, and other successfully studied individual components of the Earth system. IGBP works towards a synthesis of how these individual components interact in the dynamics of the whole, with the goal of predicting the future of the Earth in the next 100 years. To this end, IGBP has adopted many crossdisciplinary projects.
